I have for a while, been trying to figure out why Second Life was always a bit crap. It always felt a bit contrived, unnatural – forcing social interactions which every unsuccessful web 2.x startup has discovered is a dead dog from the start. Relationships form where interest and empathy lie, and a jerky difficult to use 3d environment gets very much in the way of that. Perhaps in a few years… perhaps SL will be seen as one of those things which was ahead of its time… although I wouldn’t bet on it. While Bob C doesn’t really compare like for like here, his thoughts sum it up very well for me.
